We’ve just reached the half-way mark of the 2021/22 Surrey 2 rugby season. The Old Wimbledonians First XV currently sits in joint-third/fourth place in the league table, level on points with Chipstead, just three points off the top spot.

Having played nine and won seven (with the two losses both resulting from very close contests), there’s a huge amount of confidence within the squad at the moment.

Some highlights so far have included a 39-0 dispatching of Cranleigh in round two, and the recent dismantling of Economicals at Coombe Lane in which we hit 50 points in a game for the first time this year.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of this season, though, has been the resilience shown in grinding out tight away victories against dangerous sides like Met. Police and the familiar faces of Old Wellingtonians

First XV Captain James Howell said, "It’s been a really successful first half of the season. Seven wins from nine in this hugely competitive league is something to be very proud of. Now the challenge is to match that in the return fixtures. If we can do that, or possibly even improve on it, we’ll be in a great position at the end of the season.”

“For that to happen, though, the entire squad needs to put in the hard work at training. We’ll have to go up another level in the remaining games if we want to maintain these winning ways, but I’m confident we can do that if we continue to train well and prepare properly every week.”

We now head into the first round of those return fixtures this weekend. And while it’s slightly strange to have already reached the half-way point before Christmas, it does present a unique opportunity to finish 2021 with a great deal of momentum.

This Saturday, December 4, we face Cranleigh, who will undoubtedly be a much tougher prospect at their own ground deep in south Surrey. Following that, on Saturday, December 11, we’ll welcome our closest rivals Old Blues to Coombe Lane with a chance to get revenge for a disappointing defeat earlier in the campaign.

As James said, in order to secure two wins from these remaining games, and end the year on a positive note, the commitment and intensity in training will need to be at an all-time high over the next two weeks.

Training continues as always, Tuesday and Thursday this week, starting at 7:30pm sharp. All players involved with the First XV squad should make every effort to attend to ensure we're fully prepared for these challenging fixtures.

And to all our members, friends, family, neighbours, and everyone from the wider community, please come along to support the side if you can on Saturday afternoons. A point of differentiation in all the games we’ve won this season has been the fantastic energy from the crowd on the touch line!
