The Old Wimbledonians First XV produced yet another impressive performance on Saturday, earning a 27-12 victory at home against Chipstead.
That makes it four wins from five games so far in the 2021/22 season, placing us third in the league table.

A fairly even first half saw no quarter given by either side for most of the 40 minutes. A dominant first couple of scrums from a familiar Chipstead pack may have set off some panic among the home supporters, but the OWs matched them for power and started to play with some good continuity. Too much of that play, however, was around the half-way line rather than in opposition territory.

Still, the OWs did manage to convert a penalty, and soon after scored an excellent counter-attacking try through newcomer Sam Cawley to take a 10-0 lead. As the first period came to a close, some outstanding defence on our own try line kept Chipstead from registering any points, leaving the score 10-0 at half-time.

Starting the second half with our Vice-Captain Aidan O’Brien in the sin bin helped Chipstead score two rolling maul tries in quick succession, giving them a tight 12-10 lead just as we got back to our full complement of 15.

Of course the boys remained confident that, with good discipline and field position, we had the beating of the visitors... and so it proved. 17 unanswered points soon followed, including a fine team try which was very well finished by 18-year-old wing John Curri, a strong charge over the line from Joe Bell, and a second for Sam Cawley after a spell of relentless pressure inside the Chipstead 22.

Excellent discipline all throughout the team allowed the OWs to keep the pressure on the away side, and it could have been an even bigger final score if not for a couple of late errors.

But securing another valuable bonus point will give the squad plenty of momentum and confidence to take forward. And although we’re only five games into the league campaign, we already have some very strong contenders emerging for player of the season.

Thanks go to Wimbledon College for the use of their pitch and facilities, and to Chipstead for leaving the school changing rooms in immaculate condition. Congrats to everyone involved in the game, as well.

Now on to the next challenge, away to Old Wellingtonians this weekend on Saturday!
