Pre-Season 2020 is Kicking Off!

Our 2020/21 pre-season is currently underway, with training taking place every Tuesday and Thursday evening at our Old Wimbledonians club house on Somerset Avenue in Raynes Park (SW20 0BJ). Training begins at 7pm sharp, so please arrive early and ready to play so the sessions can start on time.

It's been a fantastic start so far, and we're excited to see everyone back at the club ready to return to rugby in a safe manner after last season was brought to an abrupt end due to the coronavirus pandemic

These training sessions are initially serving as a fun but challenging way to sharpen up the skills and get back to fitness over the summer, while developing new systems and patterns of play in preparation for the coming season.

They've also been used as an excellent way to bring the squad back together in a social capacity, and to welcome any new players, with a few well-earned beers on our sun-soaked terrace after each session as well.

Health and Safety for COVID-19

Training this summer will obviously be a bit different from the type of sessions we're normally used to, with the looming threat of the coronavirus still a concern. Rest assured we'll be prioritising health and safety with regards to the COVID-19 situation, and will be following the RFU's official road-map for returning to rugby safely.

Clubs at our level are currently at Stage D on that road-map, which means:

  • Some adapted contact training can take place within limited groups
  • Non-contact games can be played to make training more competitive
  • Sharing of equipment will be carefully managed
  • Balls and any other equipment will be cleaned between drills and games
  • We'll be putting a strong emphasis on hand hygiene for all players.

New Players Always Welcome

We're actively seeking new players for our First XV, our Vets, and our Warriors (juniors) sections this year, and are always keen to welcome some new faces. Existing members of the OWs who introduce a new player to the First XV squad will also be able to claim a reward via our Player Referral Scheme, so please encourage any friends, family, or colleagues to come down and get involved.

For anyone looking for a new rugby club in South West London, or anyone looking to give rugby a try for the first time, the Old Wimbledonians is the ideal place. We're a sociable, community-oriented, all-ages club with excellent facilities and a young, talented squad. You can read our Director of Rugby's reflections on last season here to gain some more insight into our ambitions for 2020 and beyond.

Feel free to come along for training one Tuesday or Thursday evening to get a feel for the club. If you have any questions, you can get in touch with our First XV Captain, James Howell, at This email address is being protected from spambots. Looking Ahead to the New Season

It's currently uncertain at what speed we'll progress through the roadmap, so plans for pre-season training will stay this way until further notice. We'll be keeping a close eye on the RFU's advice and will provide updates as soon as we know more.

In the mean-time the coaching staff and committee will be working hard, both on and off the pitch, to ensure the squad is ready for the eventual start of the highly anticipated 2020/21 season.

During this time, we'd like to ask all our players and members to continue supporting the club by spreading the word about training, engaging with us on social media, and joining us at the club house every now and again to enjoy a cold beer and some delicious food out on the terrace.

Thanks. See you Tuesday!
