New Season, New Faces, New Beginnings
There’s been an incredible buzz down at the Old Wimbledonians RFC over the summer, with the commitment and intensity at pre-season training reaching new heights this year, and there are plenty of reasons for that.
This season, the senior section of the rugby club is welcoming a new era, as James Howell stepped up to take over the First XV captaincy from Rory Southgate after his three years of outstanding service. Additionally, Richard Travers began a new chapter in his family’s rich and storied history with the OWs by replacing club legend Richard Brayne-Nicholls as Chairman, and thanking the latter for the wonders he’s done on the committee during his 10+ years of hard work.
We’ve also welcomed a new Director of Rugby, who joins us all the way from Australia – Gabriel Enright, bringing a wealth of experience having had great success coaching Sydney University and Terrigal Trojans, following a stint at Wimbledon RFC during his playing days. Gabriel has made a fantastic impact so far, and has already got the squad well-drilled and raring to go.
As part of his strategy, Gabriel has introduced a new Player Referral Scheme, which will allow members of the OWs to claim rewards for introducing a new player into the senior section of the rugby club. We’re also working hard to build up a number of new relationships with local businesses, and are extremely grateful to our partners for their on-going support.
As the 2019/20 Surrey League 2 fixtures kick off, we’ll be taking the momentum built up over pre-season into the new league campaign, and the key to that is by maintaining commitment to training. Senior rugby training session take place at the club house, every Tuesday and Thursday, starting 7pm sharp. All players who participate will be lucky enough to feast (for free) on some of the best pizza in South West London, courtesy of Lime and Thyme in Raynes Park.
Lots to Look Forward to This Year
There are plenty of exciting fixtures to look forward to this season, and we’d greatly appreciate the support on match days from all the members of the club who are able to come along and cheer the boys to victory.
Of course, there’s also the Rugby World Cup to look forward to in September and October, culminating in early November, and all the major games will be shown on the big screens at our club house on Somerset Avenue (SW20 0BJ). We’ve also organised a wide range of social events planned throughout the year which will keep everyone busy, so don’t forget to have a look and mark your calendars!
Perhaps the most attractive fixture this side of Christmas will be when the OWs welcome Old Ruts to Coombe Lane for the first time in many years (Saturday, November 9, 2019), looking to capitalise on the home advantage we concede during the annual Boxing Day fixture which is traditionally always hosted by the Merton Park-based side.
The squad will also enjoy a well-deserved Christmas Dinner at the club house after their home game against Old Amplefordians on Saturday, December 14, 2019. All members of the senior rugby section are encouraged to attend, and wives, girlfriends, and partners are more than welcome. It’s sure to be a memorable evening. Please get in touch if you’d like to attend.
And, of course, be sure to check back in with us at the beginning of the new year, as we preview the second half of the season and look ahead to a range of exciting fixtures, events, and end-of-season celebrations!
Get Involved with the OWRFC
We’re still actively recruiting new players for 2019/20, so if you know of any friends, relatives, colleagues, or university alumni who might be interested in playing rugby this year, why not get in touch and take advantage of our Player Referral Scheme?
You don’t need to be standing in the rain on the touch line every Saturday to support the team, either. Please do follow us across all our social media channels below, like and share our posts, and spread the word, and wish the squad well whenever you get the chance!
